One thing my husband noticed about Filipinos during social events is that we always wave or nod (as a sign of acknowledgement) when introduced to other people. The first time I brought him to a Filipino party and introduced him to a group of friends, he went to their chairs, mentioned his name and offered a handshake – the Dutch way!
And when both of us were introduced to new Filipinos, faced to faced:
Filipino friend: (To everyone) This is Deb and her husband…. (To us) This is Him, Her, He and She…
Other Filipinos: (Waved) Hello!
Me: (Waved back) Hi!
Husband: (Looked at me confused and waved back awkwardly) 🤨
Me: (Whispered to him) It’s the Filipino way.
Husband: Oh! Isn’t it rude?
Me: Not to us.
Husband: Now I know why some Filipinos don’t bother to stand up when introduced because you can just wave.
Me: Uhmm, yes.
Husband: Much easier then.
